GTA 6 Wasn't Fully Formed During Trailer 1, Says Rockstar
Rockstar North's Rob Nelson reveals GTA 6 wasn't complete when Trailer 1 launched, calling Tom Petty's song a rallying 'mission statement' for the team.
Trailer 1 Was a Goal, Not a Finished Product
When Rockstar dropped the first GTA 6 trailer back in December 2023, many fans assumed the game was well into its final stretch. According to Rockstar North president Rob Nelson, the reality was a little more complicated. In a recent interview with Trois Couleurs, Nelson explained that the game was far from locked down at that point — the trailer represented a vision of what GTA 6 needed to become, not a snapshot of a finished work.
The choice of Tom Petty's Love is a Long Road as the trailer's soundtrack was, in Nelson's words, a genuine "mission statement" — something the development team could rally around as they pushed through the remaining years of production. It was, he said, "the best of everything you've got at that point," assembled to act as a guiding light for the direction the team needed to head.
This kind of transparency about the development process is rare from Rockstar, and it gives fans a meaningful look at how the studio builds momentum internally around a major release.
Research Trips Helped Shape Vice City
Nelson also touched on how Rockstar grounds its world-building in real-life research. Once the team committed to setting GTA 6 in a Miami-inspired Vice City, one of the first steps was simply going there — walking the streets, driving around, and soaking up the atmosphere firsthand. Small groups of developers would visit independently to get an unfiltered feel for the city before the larger creative process took over.
It's the kind of detail that helps explain why Rockstar's open worlds tend to feel so lived-in and specific.
What This Means Heading Into 2026
With GTA 6 now set to launch on November 19, 2026, Nelson's comments are a reminder of just how long and iterative AAA development really is. The gap between concept and finished game is enormous — and trailers, however polished, are often as much about internal motivation as external marketing.
