GTA 6 Criminal Profile System Tracks How Violent You Play

GTA 6's new Criminal Profile system monitors your aggression level during crimes, echoing Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor mechanic.

A Smarter Wanted System for GTA 6

Rockstar Games has revealed that GTA 6 will go well beyond the classic Wanted star system seen in previous entries. Confirmed in an interview with IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that the game introduces a Criminal Profile system — a dynamic mechanic that tracks just how violently players behave during crimes and police chases.

The traditional Wanted system does return: get spotted breaking the law and the police will come after you. But how you respond to that heat is now recorded and remembered.

How the Criminal Profile System Works

While eluding police, Jason and Lucia have options that go beyond simply outrunning cops. Players can:

  • Switch vehicles and change clothing to throw off pursuit
  • Split up and flee in separate directions
  • Avoid escalating confrontations — no shooting, no additional violence

According to Nelson, players who commit a crime and slip away quietly, without opening fire or ramping up the chaos, will be treated differently by the system than those who leave a trail of destruction behind them.

"If you hit and run, commit a crime and run, get into trouble and move on before the cops get there, and you don't start shooting people, don't start escalating... but if you don't, you're gene" — Rob Nelson, Rockstar North

A System Built Around the Story

Rockstar's stated goal is for the Criminal Profile system to reinforce the game's central narrative — a story about a couple on the run. Nelson noted the team deliberately designed gameplay systems to support that storytelling wherever possible. The parallel to Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system is clear: your choices shape not just the immediate moment, but potentially how the world perceives and reacts to you over time.

With GTA 6 set to launch on November 19, 2026, this is one of the more compelling mechanical details to emerge so far. Check out our news hub for more confirmed GTA 6 details as they arrive.
