Dan Houser Weighs In on the Physical vs Digital Debate

Dan Houser — co-founder of Rockstar Games and one of the creative minds behind the GTA franchise — has offered his personal take on the future of physical game media. Speaking to IGN, Houser's position was measured: he said he doesn't personally feel strongly either way, but believes studios and publishers have a responsibility to offer physical copies if there is genuine consumer demand for them.

His comments come at a time when the conversation around physical media has intensified, largely prompted by Sony's announcement that it plans to phase out disc support by 2028.

What Houser Actually Said

Houser's remarks were notably balanced rather than strongly opinionated:

  • He acknowledged he personally doesn't feel attached to physical releases, while also adding that he does love physical media — a slight contradiction that suggests genuine ambivalence.
  • He pointed to the ability to patch and update digital games as a real quality-of-life benefit for both developers and players.
  • Lazlow Jones, a fellow former Rockstar veteran now working alongside Houser at Absurd Ventures, noted he appreciates both the tactile nostalgia of discs and the convenience of downloading a game mid-travel.

Keep in mind Dan Houser departed Rockstar back in 2020 and has no direct role in GTA 6's development. His brother, Sam Houser, remains at Rockstar ahead of the game's November 19, 2026 release.

What This Means for GTA 6 Players

Houser's comments don't tell us anything definitive about GTA 6's own physical release plans — that's entirely Rockstar and Take-Two's call. However, given the scale of GTA 6's anticipated audience, a physical edition seems almost certain at launch. Whether physical media remains a long-term option beyond that will depend on broader industry trends.
